I think there’s something to be proud of here, but the stress involved getting to this point may not have been worth it:

Wow, your state is generous?! I get a third of that in CO.

Not being rude, but how old are you? Curious because of your federal return amount.

That actually says “tax due”...so like all but $1 of their return (which, since TurboTax charges for State taxes, means they owe money) goes right to the State.

ETA: I got $2,300 this year (as I get every year). 23 year old in college seems to yield decent returns!

Good job I think! I always pay more in taxes to ensure getting a refund. I don't think I could trust myself to be fiscally responsible enough to plan for taxes.

I know that's the way it's supposed to be done, but how did you end up owing the state $1200 bucks? Did you not pay taxes at all?

Are you working? If you are, you should consider adjusting so you get $0 return and earn interest on that $2300 over the course of the year. Of course, some people wouldn’t save any more that way and a lump sum with no interest still works out better for them. Personal preference.

Eh, this year that $2,300 helped me go from couch surfing to having my own place to live. Last year’s $2,300 allowed me to immediately start my transition. I think I’ll leave it as it is. A number of my life’s milestones occur around tax time for good reason, I guess. :)

I am in my 40's, married, lotsa kids, masters degree, STEM job. I try to adjust my withholdings to get close to zero refund or liability every year, but it’s never been $1 before.

That’s good! I think most people would see an extra ~$50 a week and not really consider the impact of saving versus spending. Getting it at the end of the (tax) year works well in that case.

Until you get a bonus near the end of the year that throws you into penalty withholding. I used to do that but now I give myself a good thousand dollar buffer.

Nice job! It is worth it IMO. The closest I’ve ever done is $68 refund from the Fed - usually in the sub $300 refund range. No state income tax to worry about in TX.

Ah, well then, good job!

It was either what you said or you are single, young, and have a good job.
